Vision Through Music (VTM) is a collaboration between the Children’s Eye Foundation of AAPOS (CEF of AAPOS) and Academy of Music for the Blind (AMB) to increase the number of music teachers who work with blind and partially sighted children. AMB provides a virtual orientation program that gives music teachers experience working with blind children and will create web-based educational content. CEF of AAPOS hosts a registry of music teachers with experience teaching blind and partially sighted students, helping families of visually impaired children find appropriate teachers.
“Timber is 4 years old and fully blind. She is enrolled in a music class with her sighted peers. Thanks to Vision Through Music, her teacher was able to receive special training working with visually impaired students. She provides tactile activities for every music lesson. Timber gets to play with a magnetic major scale in class, puppets, and more.
Timber absolutely loves her class. She sings the songs that they learn all day. When we listen to any other music, she loves to identify fast/slow tempos and high/low notes. Timber has always struggled with fine motor skills, but they work on hand signs for do re mi and she told me that it is hard, but she is slowly getting it! These skills are going to be so helpful in learning the play the piano and typing on her brailler.”
